Barefoot Awareness: Finding Ground Beneath Our Feet

Summer naturally invites us to spend more time outdoors. Whether walking along the beach, tending a garden, or crossing a patch of grass, this season offers countless opportunities to experience the simple pleasure of being barefoot.

While going barefoot can feel freeing and enjoyable, it also offers something deeper: an opportunity to reconnect with one of the most important yet often overlooked parts of our bodies, our feet.

From a movement perspective, the feet are our foundation. Every step we take begins with the relationship between our feet and the earth. Composed of 26 bones, 33 joints, and a remarkable network of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue, the feet are designed to absorb force, adapt to changing terrain, and provide the sensory feedback that helps us move efficiently through the world.

When the feet function well, they support healthy alignment and movement throughout the entire body. The ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and spine are all influenced by what happens below. Yet many of us spend our days in supportive shoes, walking on flat surfaces, disconnected from the rich sensory information available through our feet.

This is where barefoot awareness becomes so valuable.

In somatic movement, we focus not only on movement itself but on the sensations that accompany it. Walking barefoot on grass, sand, or other natural surfaces can awaken our awareness of pressure, texture, temperature, balance, and weight transfer. We begin to notice how the feet respond, adapt, and communicate with the rest of the body. The simple act of feeling the earth beneath us can deepen our sense of presence and connection.

Many movement traditions recognize the importance of the feet. In Yoga Narada®, the feet are considered the foundation of stability, balance, and our energetic connection to the earth. The Sanskrit word Pada, meaning foot, appears throughout yogic teachings and reminds us that support begins from the ground up. Attention is often directed toward how the feet meet and organize on the floor, creating a stable base from which the rest of the body can move with greater ease and freedom.

Years ago, while teaching in New York City, I had a client who had spent many years living in China. She often spoke about public reflexology paths found in parks and community spaces. These pathways were made of smooth stones of varying sizes and shapes that stimulated different areas of the feet as people walked across them. What struck me was how common they were and how people of all ages incorporated them into their daily lives. The feet were not viewed simply as something that carried us from place to place, but as an important gateway to health and vitality.

Traditional Chinese Medicine places great significance on the feet. Several major meridians begin or end there, including the Kidney meridian, which is associated with vitality, nourishment, and resilience. On the sole of the foot lies Kidney 1, often called the "Bubbling Spring" point, traditionally viewed as a place where energy can be drawn upward from the earth, helping us cultivate a sense of rootedness and stability.

In GYROKINESIS®, the feet are far more than passive supports. They are active participants in movement. Through conscious footwork, weight shifts, spiraling actions, and grounding exercises, we explore how force and energy travel from the feet through the legs into the pelvis and spine. A more responsive and adaptable foot can often create greater ease, stability, and freedom throughout the entire body.

Whether viewed through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine, yoga, or modern movement science, the message is remarkably similar: our feet provide the foundation for how we move, balance, and interact with the world beneath us.

This summer, I invite you to spend a few moments exploring your relationship with the ground beneath you. Walk slowly across grass. Feel the texture of sand beneath your feet. Notice how your weight shifts as you move and how your feet respond to different surfaces. Observe the subtle conversation between your feet and the earth.

Sometimes the simplest experiences offer the greatest insights. By bringing awareness to our feet, we reconnect not only with movement, but with the simple pleasure of summer and our relationship to the world around us.
